Visit Jan Mayen

Jan Mayen is a Norwegian island located in the Arctic Ocean, between Greenland and Norway. It is known for its wild nature and rich wildlife, including whales, walruses, seals and various seabirds. Jan Mayen also has an active volcano called Beerenberg, one of the largest active volcanoes in Europe. The island is uninhabited apart from a scientific base which was established by the Norwegian government in 1921.

Visiting Jan Mayen can be quite challenging due to its remote location but birdwatchers especially enjoy visiting it as there are over 30 species of birds that migrate to the island every year. Another great activity for visitors is taking a hike up Beerenberg where you can see stunning views across the island's rugged terrain.

Interesting historical facts surrounding Jan Mayen include that it was discovered by Dutch explorer Jan Jacobszoon May van Schellinkhout in 1614 and claimed by Norway in 1930 after more than 200 years of dispute with Denmark-Norway regarding jurisdiction over it.
