Visit Gulf

The Gulf region of Papua New Guinea is located on the south coast and is home to many villages and towns in a variety of landscapes. It's known for its colourful culture, distinct languages, incredible wildlife, fascinating history and beautiful scenery. Located in the centre of the area is Kerema Town - a gateway to explore all that Gulf has to offer.

For nature lovers, there's Kikori River where one can go bird-watching or take a boat ride through mangroves and see crocodiles and monitor lizards; while for those who like adventure there are plenty of options from snorkelling to canoeing.

For a glimpse into culture and history, visit Salamaua War Museum which commemorates World War II battles fought around Lae in 1942; or Gavagal Tribe Village where visitors can learn about traditional ways of life. Both sites offer an insight into how people live in Gulf today.

Gulf also has more than its fair share of interesting stories - like the "Great Raid" which involved thousands of Japanese soldiers storming Rabaul in 1942; or the mysterious disappearance of Michael Rockefeller off New Guinea's coastline in 1961 during his expedition to collect cultural artifacts for his father Nelson Rockefeller's museum collections - both adding intrigue to this part of PNG's past.
