The Itapua Department of Paraguay is a popular tourist destination, offering a variety of cultural and natural attractions. The department is located in the southeast corner of the country, bordering both Argentina and Brazil, with the Parana River flowing through its center. Visitors can explore one of the oldest cities in Paraguay, Encarnacion, or take part in some of the many festivals held throughout the year. Nature lovers will enjoy visiting Parque Nacional Cerro Cora's stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife or exploring one of Itapua's many parks such as San Bernardino National Park.

Itapua has a rich history that dates back to colonial times when it was settled by Jesuit missionaries in 1609. In July 1811 it became the first department to declare its independence from Spain during Paraguay's War for Independence. Today visitors can still see remnants from this period such as Jesuits ruins located on San Cosme y Damian Island off Encarnacion's coast or Fortaleza de Santa Teresa which was built by Spanish settlers in 1750.
