Visit Ayacucho


Ayacucho is a city located in the Peruvian Andes, about 9 hours south of Lima. Known as the "City of Churches", Ayacucho has over 33 churches and cathedrals built during colonial times - many of which are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It's an important tourist destination due to its beautiful architecture and rich cultural heritage.

When visiting Ayacucho, be sure to check out the Plaza de Armas and visit the Compania de Jesus Church, both of which are popular tourist attractions in town. The Iglesia La Merced is also worth a visit; it was constructed in 1540 by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro.

One of the major historical events associated with Ayucacho is known as the Battle at Ayacucho (1824) which marked Peru's independence from Spain after 300 years of colonial rule - making it an important part of Peru's national identity.
