Visit Callao

The Callao of Peru is a port city and the capital of the Callao Region. It is located on the central coast of Peru and is one of the most important seaports in South America. The city has an interesting history that dates back to 1537 when it was first founded as a Spanish port by Francisco Pizarro.

Callao offers plenty for tourists to see and do. Popular attractions include exploring El Muelle de Guerra, a 19th century dockyard full of maritime artifacts, walking along the waterfront promenade with its statues, monuments, and historic buildings, or visiting Parque del Amor where you can take in stunning views of Lima Bay below. For those interested in wildlife, there are several islands off Callao's coast which are home to sea lions, dolphins, birds and other marine species.

An interesting historical fact about Callao is that during World War II it was an important navy base for both Allied forces and Japanese submarines alike who used it as their base from which they carried out operations throughout Latin America.
