Visit Moquegua

Moquegua is a region in southern Peru located between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains. It is known for its rich historical heritage, dating back to pre-Incan times. Today, Moquegua is known for its archaeological sites which have been well-preserved over centuries.

Two popular touristy places to visit in Moquegua include the Yanahuara Observatory and Sillustani Archaeological Site. The Yanahura Observatory was built in 1570 by Amerindians who used it to track solar activity and as a type of clock. The Sillustani site consists of an impressive group of funerary towers called chullpas with some nearly 15 meters high dating from the 12th century A.C..

An interesting historical fact about Moquegua is that Incan ruler Tupac Yupanqui ordered its conquest in 1458, making it one of his last acquisitions before he died in battle against his son Huayna Capac shortly afterward.
