Visit Southern Province
The Southern Province of Rwanda is a stunningly beautiful part of the country, with lush green hills and valleys that are perfect for exploring. A must-see destination in the province is Akagera National Park, where you can spot wildlife like elephants, lions and hippos. Another popular tourist spot is Nyungwe Forest National Park - home to over 13 species of primates including chimpanzees.
Historically speaking, this region was originally settled by the Twa people and later granted to Tutsi warriors as a reward for their service to the king in 16th century. This area was also one of the most heavily affected by the Rwandan Genocide in 1994; however today it stands as an example of hope and resilience that communities can rebuild after tragedy.
