Visit Saint Pierre Island

Saint Pierre and Miquelon is a group of small islands off the coast of Newfoundland. This French overseas territory is made up of the main island, Saint Pierre, and several smaller ones. The island has been colonized since 1536, when Basque fishermen began arriving to take part in the cod fisheries.

The picturesque town of Saint Pierre is full of 18th century architecture and small boutiques selling local souvenirs such as ice wine, smoked salmon, and homemade preserves. One interesting historical fact about this region is that it was one of the last North American areas captured by the Germans during WWII in 1940.

While visiting this quaint corner of France tourists can enjoy several activities including hiking on miles of pristine trails or fishing in its crystal clear waters where they can catch mackerel or squid for dinner. Boat tours are also available around Miquelon-Langlade National Park which consists mainly an archipelago with abundant wildlife like puffins, whales and seals. The charming village at La Dune blanche provides incredible views from atop its sand dunes while visitors can explore historic buildings dating back to 1755 from a time when pirates were known to roam these waters.
