The Acquaviva of San Marino is a small state located within Italy and is the oldest surviving sovereign state in the world. It consists of three fortified towers, each dating back to antiquity, as well as a central government building. Visitors to this country can explore its picturesque streets and piazzas or visit some of its many attractions including Montale Castle, an old fortification that was home to the noble family for centuries; The Three Towers, which are considered the symbol of San Marino; and Monte Titano, the highest point in San Marino with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Additionally, one can take a trip to Serravalle's Basilica della Beata Vergine del Soccorso which dates back over 500 years. An interesting historical fact about Acquaviva is that it has maintained its independence since 301 A.D., making it one of only two such countries in Europe (the other being Vatican City).
