Visit Kaolack


Kaolack is a city located in the region of Senegal, West Africa. It is the capital of the Kaolack region and one of the oldest cities in Senegal. It was founded by the Serer people of Senegal centuries ago. Today, it is home to approximately 150,000 residents and serves as an important economic hub for traders and merchants from all over West Africa.

Kaolack boasts many tourist attractions such as its museums, sacred sites and bustling markets where visitors can purchase local handicrafts, jewelry, artwork and food. The local sights include the Tukulor Mosque which has stood since 16th century or Le Grand Marche which is Kaolacks main market place where you can find practically anything from food to clothing to fabrics.

An interesting historical fact about Kaolack is that it served as an important trading post for African slaves during pre-colonial times with caravans travelling up to 600km for trade between various parts of West Africa. Another notable fact about Kaolack is that it was also one of the first places in Senegal where Western missionaries arrived hoping to convert locals into Christianity during colonial times.
