Visit Tambacounda Region

The Tambacounda Region of Senegal is a vast region bordering Mali in the east and Guinea to the south. Covering around 4% of the country, it's known for its tropical climate and traditional Senegalese culture.

One of the main attractions in this area are its endless sand dunes. Visit Kedougou where you can explore these sweeping sands or take a trip southwest to visit Lompoul Desert, an iconic Saharan desert with numerous sand dunes as well as lakes and rivers lined by white beaches.

In addition to its natural beauty, there are also plenty of historical sites within Tambacounda Region that are worth exploring. The Musee-Maison Theodore Monod provides visitors with an insight into West African culture, while nearby Kedougou hosts some fascinating ancient mosques such as those built by the 19th century rulers Foumban and Ahmadu Sokoto.

Tambacounda is also historically significant due to its role in slave trading during colonial times when merchants would bring slaves here from The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone and Liberia before selling them on to buyers further north.
