Visit Northern Province

The Northern Province of Sierra Leone is a region rich with history and culture. The largest city is Makeni, with a population of over 100,000 inhabitants. It has the highest number of cultural centers in the country, including traditional festivals such as Chabaiya and Timbana.

Tourists visiting this area can experience true African culture by exploring its many attractions. In Makeni there are two popular tourist sites: The Mamato Mosque and the Bomboli Pottery Village. These sites reveal much about the local history and provide a unique insight into Sierra Leone's past life before colonization.

Sierra Leone's Northern Province was also home to one of West Africa's first universities, Fourah Bay College which was established in 1827 by British missionaries who wanted to spread Christianity among local people at that time. Today Fourah Bay College remains one of the oldest universities in Africa offering several courses in Science, Arts & Social Sciences as well as Medicine & Health Sciences for Sierra Leonean students wanting to pursue higher education degrees closer to home.
