Visit Nugal

The Nugal region, located in the semi-autonomous state of Puntland within Somalia, is home to a diverse population of Somali people. With a distinct culture and colorful history, it is an ideal place for travelers looking for something off the beaten path. It has numerous exotic landscapes ranging from rocky mountains to sandy deserts as well as rich wildlife and abundant fishing spots.

Two places worth visiting while in Nugal are Laas Geel, an ancient rock art site featuring paintings believed to be over 5,000 years old; and Cal Madow National Park, where visitors can explore majestic peaks and lush valleys on foot or horseback. Local guides are available at both sites to share their knowledge of the area's history and culture.

An interesting historical fact about Nugal is that it was home to one of Somalia's most powerful Sultans - Garaad Mahamuud Farax Gurxan - who ruled from 1816-1830 CE before eventually being overthrown by Mohammed Ali himself. This period saw major changes in trade routes which connected East Africa with the Middle East through Nugal ports such as Bosaso and Garowe.
