Visit Sanaag


Sanaag is an administrative region and province in the northeastern part of Somalia. It covers a total area of 17,448 km2 and its capital city is Erigavo. Sanaag has a population of around 526,000 people and its main clans are Warsangeli, Dhulbahante, Dulbahante Habar Yonis and Harti (Darod).

The Sanaag region boasts many fascinating archaeological sites with some dating back to as early as the 8th century AD. One such site is Laas Geel which consists of ancient rock art depicting wild animals such as antelope and cattle. Other tourist attractions include Sheikh Isaaq's Tomb in Maydh where pilgrims come to pay respect to the founder of Somali nationhood and beautiful beaches like Caluula beach located on Caluula Island off the shoreline near Badhan town.

An interesting historical fact about Sanaag includes that it was an important trading post throughout antiquity for items like frankincense from Yemen, ivory from Ethiopia etc., linking them with other countries in Africa, Middle East & Europe.
