Woqooyi Galbeed is a region of the country Somalia, located in the northwest of the country and bordered by Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Somaliland. It is one of the 18 administrative provinces of Somalia that make up what is now known as Somaliland. It has 1,500 square kilometers in area. The population is made up mainly by ethnic Somali clans including Habar Awal Isaaq and Dir.

The capital city of Woqooyi Galbeed is Hargeisa which serves as a commercial hub due to its proximity to port cities in Ethiopia and Djibouti. Tourists who visit Woqooyi Galbeed can explore rock art sites at Las Geel or take some time for sightseeing at Dhoobley Hill Fort. The colorful markets located throughout the region are also fun to explore and provide an insight into traditional Somali culture.

An interesting historical fact about Woqooyi Galbeed is that it was part of colonial British Somaliland until 1950 when it became part of Italian-controlled Somalia after World War II ended. This led to several decades of tension between local populations and colonial authorities before independence was achieved in 1960 with the formation of modern day Somalia.
