Point of Interest

Plaza Mayor, located in the heart of Madrid, Spain, is a grand arcaded square that has been a hub of activity for more than 400 years. This rectangular plaza, surrounded by three-story residential buildings with 237 balconies facing the square, is known for its vibrant atmosphere and stunning architecture, including the Casa de la Panaderia, a beautifully decorated municipal and cultural building.

Visitors to Plaza Mayor can enjoy a variety of sights and activities. One of the main attractions is the statue of King Philip III on horseback, located in the center of the square. Additionally, the plaza is home to numerous cafes and restaurants where visitors can experience traditional Spanish cuisine. The square also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including a popular Christmas market.

Plan your visit

  1. Visit Plaza Mayor during the day as it tends to be more crowded in the evenings when artists and other performers come out.
  2. Bring food along with you to munch on while people-watching from one of the many benches around the plaza.
  3. Have your camera ready - there are some great shots to capture all around, especially of the impressive architecture of Plaza Mayor!
  4. Make sure to check out some of the local restaurants located on its perimeter for a delicious tapas or patatas bravas experience!
