Visit Northern Province

The Northern Province of Sri Lanka is an area of rich cultural heritage, spectacular nature and many historical sites. It is home to the ancient cities of Jaffna, Mannar and Vavuniya, as well as the sacred Nallur Kandaswamy Temple. Popular tourist destinations include Jaffna Fort, which was destroyed in 1620 by the Portuguese but rebuilt in its original form by the Dutch; Delft Island for its pristine beaches; and Nagadeepa Temple for its iconic architecture. For a taste of local culture, visit the Wilpattu National Park or take a scenic boat ride around Mannar Island.

The region has an interesting history - it was originally known as Eelam or Hela during pre-historic times when it was ruled by three clans: Chola, Pandya and Chera. During colonial times it became part of British Ceylon before gaining independence in 1948 when it joined with Sri Lanka to form one country.
