Visit Sennar

The Sennar of Sudan is an ancient region located in the center of the country along the Blue Nile. It was for centuries a place where traders and travelers alike could find respite, and today it remains a destination for those seeking a taste of history. Many visitors explore Sennar to experience its rich cultural heritage and archaeological sites. One popular sightseeing destination is the ruins of Old Dongola, which once served as an important trading post during medieval times. At Old Dongola you can explore traditional courtyard houses, mosques, cemeteries and more.

The area is also home to fascinating wildlife including hippopotamus, cheetah, caracal lynx and various species of fish in Lake Nasser. There are also numerous bird species to observe including rare ones such as green wood hoopoe and white-crested turaco. For an even deeper insight into Sennar's past you should visit Kutum Ruins; one of the most significant archaeological sites in North Africa dating back to 4th century AD. Here you can learn about its former role as an important Islamic city before it was destroyed by Bedouin raids centuries later.
