Visit South Darfur


South Darfur is a province of Sudan located in the western part of the country. It covers an area of 140,000 sq km and has an estimated population of 2.2 million people. The capital city is Nyala, which serves as the administrative centre for the governorate and is home to around one million residents.

The region boasts a unique range of wildlife, landscapes and cultural attractions that make up its diverse tourism offer. Tourists can explore ancient archaeological sites such as Jebel Marra, visit villages along the Rahad River or take part in traditional sports such as camel racing at Alwaha Stadium. In addition, local markets provide insight into daily life while Jabal Moya National Park offers excellent safari opportunities with chances to spot zebra, giraffe antelope and other wildlife species.

Historically speaking, South Darfur was once a major trading centre along caravan routes between North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa during medieval times when it was under Muslim rule from 1234-1874 CE under various ethnic rulers including Tuareg Berber tribesmen who left behind many ancient archaeological sites in the region today.
