The Commewijne district of Suriname is a tranquil slice of paradise in South America. Located on the east bank of the Suriname River - one of the major rivers in South America - it is known for its lush rainforest, diverse wildlife and laid-back vibe. It's a great destination for nature lovers, who can explore the river by boat or take hikes through the surrounding jungle and spot exotic birds, monkeys and other animals.

For a taste of local culture and history, visitors can visit Fort Nieuw Amsterdam which dates back to 1734 when it was built by Dutch settlers. There's also Paramaribo Zoo which is home to hundreds of species from around the world including endangered ones like jaguars and giant armadillos.

A popular attraction for tourists is Galibi Nature Reserve on Maripa Island where leatherback turtles come ashore every year to lay their eggs. It's possible to stay in beach huts here so visitors can witness this incredible spectacle first-hand under starlit Caribbean skies.
