Paramaribo is the capital city of the South American country of Suriname, situated on the banks of the Suriname River. A popular destination for travelers, Paramaribo offers visitors a unique blend of cultures, with influences from both Dutch and African cultures. Tourists can explore attractions like Fort Zeelandia, an 18th-century Dutch fort overlooking the river and Neveh Shalom Synagogue, one of only two synagogues in South America. They can also visit Palmentuin Park to admire its fountain and founder's monument or take a stroll through Watermolenpark to view a reconstructed windmill from Amsterdam. Other tourist sites include Presidential Palace and other colonial buildings in downtown Paramaribo.

The city has an interesting history that dates back to 1613 when it was founded by English settlers as part of their West India Company colony. During this period it was known as Fort Willoughby before being taken over by the Dutch in 1667 who renamed it Paramaribo after they captured it. It remained under Dutch control until 1975 when Suriname gained independence.
