Another great attraction is Kwamelasemoetoe Village - a traditional Maroon village with an interesting history and plenty to explore including a museum exhibiting artifacts from local tribes.

Sipaliwini also has an important role in Surinamese independence, having been home to many Maroon participants who fought against Dutch forces in 1950s warfare known as The Year War - making it an interesting site for history buffs too!
