Visit Al-Raqqah Governorate

The Al-Raqqah Governorate is an administrative division of Syria located in the north/north-eastern part of the country. It's known as both an agricultural region, and also a major center for oil production. This governorate is home to a large number of cultural sites and natural attractions that draw in tourists from all over the world.

One interesting tourist attraction within Al-Raqqah Governorate is The Euphrates Dam, which controls the water supply to much of Syria and Iraq. This massive structure was completed in 1974, making it one of the largest hydroelectric projects ever constructed at that time. Another popular site to visit is Ba'ath Dam, built along the Khabur River in 1975 by Saddam Hussein - it served as his personal summer residence during his reign over Iraq.

Al-Raqqa also has a rich historical past with archaeological remains from numerous civilizations including Sumerian and Akkadian empires, as well as Hittites, Assyrians, Greeks, Romans and more recently Islamic rule. The city was mentioned in ancient Mesopotamian tablets dating back to 800 BC indicating its importance even way back then!
