Visit As-Suwayda Governorate

The As-Suwayda Governorate of Syria is located in the south-western part of the country and borders Jordan, Palestine, and Israel. It is known for its isolated mountain villages, ancient ruins and cultural heritage. This region has a distinct Druze community which makes up around 80% of the population.

Spanning over an area of 5,550 square kilometres, As-Suwayda Governorate has many interesting places to explore, such as the historic city centre with its Roman Temples and Byzantine Churches like Al-Kasr Citadel. Tourists can also witness various archaeological sites in Khirbet al-Ghazaleh or visit the breathtaking waterfalls at Deir Mar Musa monastery.

In addition to its beautiful landscapes, this region also holds a significant place in Syria's history; it was here that Saladin defeated Crusader forces in 1188 during the Battle of Hattin. A monument now stands on the site to commemorate this momentous event.
