Visit Deir ez-Zor Governorate

The Deir ez-Zor Governorate is a province in eastern Syria, situated in the Euphrates Valley on the banks of the river. The region's beautiful landscapes are dotted with archaeological ruins from various time periods, including Mesopotamian and Greco-Roman civilizations. Deir ez-Zor is also home to several cultural landmarks including Palmyra - an ancient oasis city located in nearby Homs Governorate - and numerous old churches and monasteries.

For tourists looking to explore Deir ez-Zor, one of its most impressive sights is the 19th century Qasr al-Hayr al-Sharqi castle, built by Bedouin warlord Ibrahim Pasha al-Azm. Another popular sightseeing destination is Al Tharda Mountain - a mountain range that forms part of the wider Syrian Desert landscape with breathtaking views over the Euphrates valley below.

Deir ez Zor has been inhabited for thousands of years, dating back to Ancient Mesopotamia where it was known as Dair Alzur or "Monastery of Zor" after its founder Zor who was venerated as a god by early settlers in this area. It makes for an interesting stop on any traveler's Middle Eastern itinerary!
