Visit Latakia Governorate


The Latakia Governorate of Syria is situated in the western coastal region, located northeast of Lebanon. Heavily populated and known as an important port city, Latakia's governorate has a wide range of tourist attractions including ancient monuments, historical sites and renowned natural beauty. It is home to several mountain peaks such as Jebel al-Nusairiyeh and Al-Haffeh that are popular with visitors wanting to explore and take in views of the Mediterranean Sea from high altitudes. Tourists can also visit sites like the National Museum which houses artifacts from near and far. There are also ancient ruins like Qalaat Salaheddin which is a fortress built by Saladin during his campaign against the Crusaders in 1188 AD; limestone caves like those found at Wadi al-Uyun; archaeological remains such as those found at Ugarit; or stops at religious sites such as Jabal al-Summaq or Saydnaya Monastery. An interesting fact about Latakia Governorate is that it was one of the first areas conquered by Muslim armies under Omar Ibn Al Khattab after they crossed into Syria in 634 AD.
