Visit Ţarţūs

Tartus is located in the Alawite Mountains of Syria, near the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is a region rich with history and culture, from ancient cities to modern-day towns. Tartus is home to two major historical sites: The Citadel of Tartus and The Great Mosque of Tartus. The Citadel has been standing for centuries and its walls still bear inscriptions from Roman times. The Great Mosque was built in 1213 AD and its minaret stands proudly over the town's skyline.

An interesting historical fact is that Tartus was once home to one of the most famous Christian universities in Syria: Al-Qadiriyah University which was founded in 643 AD by a priest named Ibn al-Qadir al-Matrouzi. Here, students studied Christian theology, philosophy and medicine amongst other subjects until 1606 when it closed its doors due to political pressures placed on religious minorities by Islamic rulers at that time.

Today, those who visit Tartus can still enjoy many beautiful sights such as Bishara Palace or Park al-Baath as well as walk through Jisr al-Shughur Valley for breathtaking views along the way!
