Visit Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province


The Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province is located in the east of Tajikistan, bordering Afghanistan and China. It's known for its mountain ranges, high plateaus and stunning alpine lakes. The province is home to many historical sites, monuments, and awe-inspiring natural wonders.

One of the most popular tourist destinations in the region is Lake Karakul. This beautiful lake sits at an elevation of 3,900 meters surrounded by snow-capped mountains making it a breathtaking sight. Other attractions within the province include Murgab River Valley with its rock formations and Badakhshan National Park which offers hiking trails that lead to hot springs and breathtaking vistas of the Pamir Mountains.

Gorno-Badakhshan has been a crossroads between East and West since antiquity with some historians claiming that Alexander the Great passed through here on his way back from India in 327 BC. The area has also been home to some of Central Asia's most important Buddhist monasteries such as Khorog Monastery built around 7th century AD which still stands today as an important religious center for locals and tourists alike.
