Visit Mtwara Region

Mtwara is a region located in southeastern Tanzania. It borders with Mozambique to the south and Ruvuma Region to the west. The region is known for its tropical beaches, spice plantations, and traditional fishing villages. For tourists, some of the main attractions include Mjimwema Beach and Kilwa Kisiwani Ruins.

Mjimwema Beach has stunning white sand that stretches as far as the eye can see and crystal clear waters teeming with fish. The beach offers an ideal spot for swimming or outdoor activities such as snorkeling or diving trips within nearby coral reefs. Kilwa Kisiwani Ruins are an ancient city with mosques, fortifications, royal palaces, cemeteries, tombs and other archaeological sites older than 500 years old.

A historical fact about Mtwara is that it was under Portuguese control for nearly 200 years until 1925 when it was taken over by British colonial forces during World War I. This event marked a new period in Mtwara's history where they began to develop their infrastructure which included roads connecting them to other parts of Tanzania and ports that connected them further out into Africa and beyond.
