Rukwa Region is situated in the western part of Tanzania, bordering Zambia and Lake Tanganyika. It covers an area of 46,053 square kilometers and has a population of around 1 million people. The region is known for its abundance of wild game and tourism opportunities with Lake Rukwa National Park being one of the main attractions. Here you can spot hippos, elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo and other fascinating wildlife. A popular destination for birdwatchers too is Lumbo Springs where over 300 species have been recorded.

The capital city Sumbawanga also offers historical landmarks such as Sumbawanga Ruins - a site dating back to the 19th century which features fort walls and a tower built by Sultan Mkwawa. There are also several well-preserved German colonial buildings from the early 20th century located near Sumbawanga Town Centre.

Finally Mpanda town is also worth visiting - it was once an important trading centre during colonial times when it served as a rail hub between Ujiji on Lake Tanganyika and Dar es Salaam on the coast.
