Wat Phra Chetuphon, commonly known as Wat Pho, is a prominent Buddhist temple located in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand. Known for its grandeur and tranquility, it houses the colossal Reclining Buddha statue, which measures 46 meters in length and 15 meters in height, covered in gold leaf, making it a must-see attraction for anyone visiting the city.

Apart from the Reclining Buddha, Wat Pho is also renowned for its traditional Thai massage school, considered the first public university in Thailand. Visitors can indulge in a therapeutic massage here. The temple complex is also adorned with beautifully maintained gardens, intricate murals, and over 1,000 Buddha images, offering a rich exploration of Thailand’s spiritual and artistic heritage.

Plan your visit

  1. Dress appropriately - make sure to cover your shoulders and knees before entering the temple grounds, as this is a sign of respect for Thai culture.

  2. Don’t touch anything inside or outside the temple - there are strict rules in Thailand against touching any holy objects or statues; even taking pictures without permission from an attendant can result in punishment.

  3. Bring some cash with you - donations are typically accepted at Wat Phra Chetuphon, so it’s best to have some money on hand in case you wish to donate.

  4. Visit during off-peak hours - If possible, try visiting the temple early in the morning or late afternoon/evening when it isn’t as crowded and noisy so that you can experience more peace and tranquility during your visit .

  5. Take plenty of photos - While photography is not always permitted inside temples like Wat Phra Chetuphon, it’s generally acceptable (and encouraged!) on the exterior grounds - making sure that you capture all of its grandeur!
