Wat Chedi Luang, located in the heart of Chiang Mai, Thailand, is a historic Buddhist temple that dates back to the 14th century. It is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, known for its massive chedi (pagoda) that was once the tallest structure in Chiang Mai before it was partially destroyed by an earthquake in the 16th century.

Visitors to Wat Chedi Luang can marvel at the temple’s intricate Lanna-style architecture and explore its serene grounds. One of the highlights is the city pillar (Inthakin), which is believed to protect Chiang Mai. Additionally, the temple houses a beautiful Emerald Buddha replica, which is a major draw for both local and international tourists.

Plan your visit

  1. Buy your tickets in advance to avoid long lines and save money.
  2. Check the Wat Chedi Luang website for opening times and make sure that you plan your visit accordingly.
  3. Dress appropriately - shoulders and knees should be covered at this temple complex, so bear that in mind when packing for your trip!
  4. Bring a bottle of water with you, as it can get hot on the premises during the day (especially from March to May).
  5. Take advantage of all the free walking tours offered by local guides - they will provide great insight into both historical facts and culture of Chiang Mai city!
  6. Make sure to take lots of pictures while exploring Wat Chedi Luang complex - its unique architecture is truly breathtaking!
