Visit Haʻapai


Ha`apai is an archipelago of around sixty islands and atolls located in the central part of Tonga. It's known for its stunning tropical landscapes, plentiful marine life, and vast coral reefs. The region has many beaches that are great for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and other watersports. Tourists can also go on whale watching tours or take a boat tour to nearby islands like Foa Island or Uoleva Island where they can explore traditional villages and sample local cuisine.

For a unique cultural experience, visitors should visit the Ha`amonga 'a Maui Trilithon which is an ancient stone structure built with three huge limestone slabs standing 5 meters high. This monument was built by King Tupou in 12th century as a doorway to royal ceremonies honoring gods from Tongan mythology. Another must-see spot is Kalian Iki Rock which is said to be the site where Maui fished up the Tongan Islands from beneath the sea according to mythological stories passed down through generations.
