Visit Niuas

The Niuas are a group of three islands located in Tonga, a Polynesian kingdom in the Pacific Ocean. The islands, Niuafo'ou, Niuatoputapu and Tafahi, are home to roughly 4,000 people who live in traditional villages surrounded by lush forests and volcanic peaks. The locals rely mainly on fishing and agriculture for their livelihoods.

Tourists visiting the Niuas can enjoy some of Tonga's most beautiful beaches. Swim in crystal-clear waters or explore the tropical reefs filled with vibrant marine life! Stroll through Hihifo village on Niuatoputapu to learn about its fascinating history as one of the oldest settlements on the island chain.

In addition to its stunning landscape, the Niuas has a unique historical legacy due to its ancient tribal warfare traditions that lasted until late 19th century when King George Tupou I formally ended it by replacing it with inter-island sporting competitions as part of his modernisation program for Tonga.
