Visit Gabès Governorate

The Gabes Governorate is located in south-eastern Tunisia, making it the 6th largest by population. It borders Libya to both the east and south. There are some great tourist attractions in this region, including Matmata and Mareth, which are both rich in history and culture. Matmata is an ancient Berber village with a distinct architectural style that includes troglodyte settlements cut into rocky hillsides. Mareth is a town dating back more than 3 thousand years ago that was once part of the Roman Empire. This historical city holds many secrets within its walls such as its Roman thermal baths still standing today after almost 2000 years.

For nature lovers there's also plenty to do here; from desert safaris to camel rides, visitors can experience all that Tunisia has to offer. For tourists looking for something off the beaten path they should visit Chott el Djerid, which is a large lake bed stretching from north to south of Gabes Governorate.

An interesting historical fact about this region is that it was occupied by Ottoman forces during World War II before being liberated in 1943 by Allied forces under General Montgomery's 8th Army campaign "Operation Torch" .
