Visit Gafsa Governorate
Gafsa Governorate is a region of Tunisia located in the southwest corner of the country. It is bordered by Algeria to the west and Libya to the south. Gafsa is known for its rich Roman ruins, including those at El Guettar, Makthar, and Kef. Tourists visit Gafsa to explore these ancient sites as well as local attractions such as Redeyef Lake and Climates Beach.
The city of Gafsa itself has many interesting historical sites including Fort Ksour which was built in 1550 by Ottoman leader Hassan Pasha and remains largely intact today. Nearby you can also find Skifa Mabruk Mosque built in 1780 during Turkish rule which features beautiful Islamic-style architecture with blue mosaics on its facade.
Gafsa also offers scenic mountain views along with opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking or biking through lush green landscapes or sand surfing at Ksar Ouled Soltane dunes. No visit to Gafsa would be complete without a stop at Mareth Line - an impressive series of fortifications built by Allied forces during World War II - now a National Historical Monument open to visitors from around the world.
