Visit Kairouan Governorate

Kairouan Governorate is a province in Tunisia located in the centre of the country. It borders Sidi Bouzid to the west, Tunis to the north and Sousse Governorate to the east. The province is known for its historical city of Kairouan, which was founded by Muslim conquerors in 670 AD. It was once an important stop on trade routes between sub-Saharan Africa and North Africa, and it remains a vibrant city today with many attractions to explore.

Tourists visiting Kairouan will find plenty of interesting sites to explore, such as the Great Mosque of Kairouan - one of oldest mosques in North Africa dating back to 725 AD; as well as Medina - an old citadel filled with traditional markets, shops and palaces. Those seeking some outdoor adventures can enjoy hiking & biking around Dhar El Gharsa - a natural reserve home to gazelles, wild boar and other wildlife species.

For those interested in discovering more about this region's history there are two interesting facts: firstly it served as a refuge for Umayyad forces fleeing from Persia into North Africa during their struggle against Abbasids; secondly it also became one of earliest Islamic cities after its foundation by Caliph Uqba ibn Nafi nearly 1,400 years ago!
