Medenine is a governorate located in southeastern Tunisia. It is the largest governorate of the country and is bordered by Libya, Algeria, and the Tunisian Governorates of Tataouine and Gabes. The region is home to some remarkable archaeological sites as well as stunning landscapes with sand dunes, oases, and palm groves.

The most popular tourist destination in Medenine is Douz which lies at the gateway to the Sahara Desert. Here travelers can explore endless rolling sand dunes on a camel tour or take part in traditional festivals like the Camel Market Festival that takes place every December. Other interesting sites include Matmata which features underground troglodyte dwellings built into cliff faces, Ain al-Ghazala's ancient Roman baths, and El-Henchir Sidi Ali Ben Hamdouche's Neolithic tombs dating back to 5000 BC.

Aside from its many attractions for tourists, Medenine also holds historical significance for Tunisians as it was part of Omar Mukhtar's Libyan resistance movement against Italian colonial rule during World War II. Mukhtar was known for his courage and charisma and became an icon among North African freedom fighters until he was executed by Mussolini's forces in 1931.
