Visit Sousse Governorate

The Sousse Governorate in Tunisia is situated on the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is known for its beach resorts that draw tourists from around the world. The region also has a rich history, with archaeological remains that trace back to ancient Roman times.

Two popular tourist locations include the Ribat Fortress and El Jem amphitheatre. The Ribat Fortress, founded in AD 821, was once used to defend against invaders and now serves as an archaeological site of study for students and historians alike. El Jem amphitheatre, built by Romans between 238-244AD, is considered one of the biggest monuments of its kind still standing in North Africa today.

Historically speaking, this region boasts many significant moments in Tunisian history such as when Tunisian forces took control of Hammam Sousse during their War of Independence from France in 1956 or when the city was declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1988 for its intact colonial architecture still standing today.
