Visit Tataouine Governorate


The Tataouine Governorate is a region located in the south of Tunisia, in the Sahara Desert. Tourists come to visit this breathtakingly beautiful area to learn about its rich cultural heritage and explore its desert landscapes. Popular tourist destinations include Matmata, an underground Berber village carved into rocky mountains, and Chenini, an ancient hilltop village with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.

Historically speaking, Tataouine has been inhabited for many centuries by various civilizations including Phoenicians, Romans and Byzantines before becoming part of Tunisia during the 19th century. In 1941-1943 it was a key military position during World War II. Today visitors can visit old fortresses from these times as well as wander through ancient ruins such as Ghomrassen and ruins from antiquity like those at El Ksar Ouled Soltane temple complex.
