Turkmenistan – the ‘land of fires’ – is a Central Asian nation, formerly part of the Soviet Union, and known for its deserts, ancient ruins and archaeological sites. It has been called ‘the land of dreams’ by some locals, due to its rich history and culture.

The capital of Turkmenistan is Ashgabat, known for its beautiful mosques and architecture, as well as many museums chronicling the country's past. One interesting fact about Turkmenistan is that it is home to the world’s largest natural gas reserves.

A major highlight in Turkmenistan is Darvaza crater - also known as the ‘Door to Hell’ - which was created by a geological accident in 1971 when Soviet scientists were drilling for oil. This majestic sight covers an area of over 260 feet wide and 65 feet deep and burns continuously with flames shooting high up into the air.

Köw Ata underground lake is another must-see site, located close to Ashgabat. It’s around 700 meters long and filled with crystal-clear water that remains at a constant temperature of 34°C all year round! Here visitors can take a relaxing swim or take part in some mud bath therapy.

An incredible hidden gem in Turkmenistan is Ayaz Kala fort. Situated in the middle of Karakum Desert, this ancient fortress dates back to the 5th century BC and is surrounded by a series of deep and steep canyons. A visit to Ayaz Kala is like stepping back in time and seeing history come alive!

Turkmenistan may be off the beaten path, but it's definitely worth the visit. Its incredible beauty and unique culture make it one of Central Asia’s most fascinating gems. From exploring ancient ruins to relaxing at underground hot springs, there’s something for everyone in Turkmenistan!
