Visit Nanumea

Nanumea is one of nine atolls that comprise the nation of Tuvalu. Located in the central Pacific Ocean, it is home to around 600 people who live off fishing and subsistence agriculture. The tranquil waters around Nanumea are great for swimming, snorkelling and kayaking, as well as spotting majestic whales during their annual migration. Tourists can explore untouched coral reefs teeming with colourful fish or visit local villages such as Tepuka Savilivili for an insight into traditional Polynesian culture and cuisine.

Two of the most popular tourist attractions on Nanumea are Fafate Island and Nukulaelae Island. Fafate Island offers stunning white sand beaches backed by lush jungle-lined hills, whilst Nukulaelae boasts incredible views from its large inland lagoon surrounded by a dense palm forest.

Historically, Nanumea was a major centre for whaling during the 19th century due to its strategic positioning on trade routes between Australia and Europe. Remnants of this era still remain today in the form of abandoned whaling stations scattered around many parts of the island's coastline which offer an interesting insight into this past industry.
