Visit Donetsk Oblast


The Donetsk Oblast is a region of Ukraine located in the eastern part of the country. The capital of this oblast is Donetsk, a large industrial city. It has an area of about 26,000 square kilometers and a population of around 4 million people.

The Donetsk Oblast has many interesting tourist attractions, such as the Zatoka beach resort near Mariupol and the Khomutovske Reservoir beaches near Sloviansk. There is also Khortytsia Island on the Dneper River with its museums, monuments and nature reserves. A visit to Shakhtarsk Caves Park or Artemivsk Railway Station Museum will surely be rewarding experiences for tourists to this region.

From a historical perspective, it was in this region that Vsevolod I of Kiev built his first capital city in 989 AD. This city was called Belgorod (which means "White City") and eventually became known as Bila Tserkva ("White Church"). It served as an important cultural center until 1239 when it was destroyed by Mongol forces led by Batu Khan.
