Visit Luhansk Oblast

The Luhansk Oblast is a region in eastern Ukraine located on the border with Russia. It has a population of just over two million and covers an area of about 25,000 square kilometers. The capital city is Luhansk, which is known for its Baroque-style churches as well as its industrial manufacturing industry.

This oblast contains some interesting tourist attractions such as the imposing Krasnodon Fortress and Alchevsk Iron Ore Plant museum. The former was initially constructed to offer protection against Mongol invaders while the latter provides an opportunity to explore how metal ore has been mined in this region since the 19th century.

An interesting historical fact about this area is that it was founded by Cossacks in 1784 during a campaign launched by Catherine II of Russia to colonize new territories along the Don river's banks, creating what we now know as Luhansk Oblast.
