It is part of the British Overseas Territory and was discovered by Portuguese explorer Afonso de Albuquerque in 1501. Home to around 800 people, Ascension Island is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, diverse wildlife and rich history.

Here you can spot an array of seabirds and sea turtles that inhabit these waters. Another popular spot to visit is Green Mountain National Park, home to some unique vegetation such as ferns and giant heath plants as well as some spectacular waterfalls.

An interesting historical fact about Ascension Island relates to its role during WW2; it became an important air force base for American airplanes which facilitated flights between South America and Africa. In addition to this vital role during WWII it has also served as a communications hub between Britain and its colonies since 1815 when Napoleon was exiled there!
