Visit Palmyra Atoll

The Palmyra Atoll region of the United States Minor Outlying Islands is a unique and beautiful tropical paradise in the Pacific Ocean. It is home to diverse plant and animal life, including rare species of sea turtles, exotic birds and lush vegetation. This remote island is comprised of 12 small islands, which are part of an unincorporated U.S territory.

One popular tourist spot on the atoll is the Tern Island Visitor Center where visitors can explore interactive exhibits about Palmyra's natural history and marine life while learning about conservation efforts to protect its fragile ecosystem. Another favorite site for visitors is Cooper Island Reef, a shallow-water coral reef accessible by kayak or paddle board offering excellent snorkeling opportunities with some of Hawaii's most vibrant aquatic life.

A historical fact worth noting is that during WWII Palmyra was occupied by Japanese forces for two years until it was liberated in 1945 by US Marines who dropped paratroopers onto the islands from helicopters - a first-time use of such tactics!
