St. John has a long history dating back to 1666 when it was first settled by Europeans from Denmark. It is believed that Christopher Columbus himself visited the islands in 1493, during his second voyage across the Atlantic. The colonial influences still exist today in many areas on St John; sugar mills ruins are scattered throughout the landscape and visitors can even catch glimpses of old Danish colonial buildings while exploring Cruz Bay or Coral Bay Village!
