McWay Falls, located in the picturesque city of Big Sur, California, is a breathtaking 80-foot waterfall that cascades directly into the Pacific Ocean. This natural wonder, situated in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, is one of the only two waterfalls in California that plunge directly into the ocean. The sight of the water cascading down the cliff and into the turquoise waters below is truly enchanting, making it a must-visit spot for nature lovers.
While visiting McWay Falls, one can take a leisurely stroll along the Waterfall Overlook Trail, a well-maintained path that offers stunning views of the waterfall and the ocean. Another highlight is the Saddle Rock Ranch, a historic home with a unique architectural style, nestled amidst lush greenery. The serene beauty of McWay Falls and its surroundings make it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful retreat.
Plan your visit
Wear appropriate clothing and shoes for the terrain: There are a lot of loose rocks and steep trails, so make sure you wear sturdy shoes with good traction. Also dress in layers to accommodate for changes in weather.
Bring plenty of water and snacks: The trail is about 1 mile each way, so be sure to bring enough hydration and snacks with you in order to avoid dehydration or getting too hungry while on-the-go.
Check the weather conditions beforehand: Big Sur can have sudden severe rainstorms that could make the trail extremely dangerous, especially if it is a wetter season than normal; check the forecast before heading out!
Stay on designated paths at all times: It can be tempting to go off-roading or take shortcuts through nature that may lead into more challenging terrain; stay within marked trails when exploring McWay Falls!
Respect wildlife in its natural habitat: Be mindful of any animals (including snakes) that you may encounter along your journey - be prepared to respect their space or back away slowly if needed as they should not be disturbed unnecessarily during your exploration!
