The National Archives Museum, located in Washington D.C., is a treasure trove of American history. The museum is home to the original copies of the three main formative documents of the United States: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, collectively known as the Charters of Freedom. These are housed in the museum’s Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom.
Apart from these, visitors can explore the Public Vaults exhibit, which provides a unique walk-through experience of the Archives’ records. Another highlight is the David M. Rubenstein Gallery that showcases the Records of Rights exhibit, featuring original documents, photographs, and films that chronicle the evolution of rights and freedoms in America. When visiting The National Archives Museum in Washington, D.C., there are a few tips and tricks to get the most out of your experience. Make sure to plan ahead as much as possible before you go–assess what records you want to view and make any necessary arrangements in advance. When you arrive, take advantage of free audio tours or join one of the many guided tours available. Don’t forget your camera! With so many historical documents on display, it’s hard to walk away without some great photos. Lastly, remember that a lot of what is on show at The National Archives is fragile: visitors should refrain from touching displays and tapestries with their hands or other objects such as cameras or phones for the best preservation results.
