The White House, located in Washington, D.C., is one of the most iconic buildings in the United States. It has been the official residence and workplace of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800. The neoclassical structure, painted white, is a symbol of the presidency and government in the U.S. The building, with its six levels, 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, and 28 fireplaces, is a testament to the country’s history and its political power.

Visitors to the White House can explore the public rooms which are filled with beautiful furnishings, exquisite artwork, and historical artifacts. The East Room, the largest room in the White House, has been used for dances, receptions, press conferences, and even as a temporary hospital. Another must-see is the Oval Office, the president’s formal workspace, which has been personalized by each president to suit their taste. Please note that public tour requests must be submitted through one’s Member of Congress.

Plan your visit

  1. Dress appropriately: No shorts, and make sure that shoulders and knees are covered.
  2. Bring your ID: You will need to show a valid photo ID to enter the White House.
  3. Follow security guidelines: Do not bring any sharp objects or firearms into the White House grounds - leave them in your car or hotel room beforehand!
  4. Arrive early: Gates open at 7am, but the line can be long so it’s best to arrive as early as possible to ensure you get a spot inside for tours or events happening that day!
  5. Take photos from a distance only: Photography is allowed outside of the fence around the White House complex, however you cannot take photographs within close proximity to any part of the building itself nor can you use flash photography onsite (only available during official ceremonies).
